Spouse's EAD - do you need a new SS number

My wife has a SS number (when she applied 4 years ago for a driver's licence). Now with the EAD she has because of my pending I-485, she is in a position to get a job.

Does she need to file for a new Social Security number or will the current one do. We have always filed taxes jointly.

Please advice.

I guess ...

If her current SSN states that she is not eligible to work (or something to that effect), then Yes, she may want to go to the local SSN office and get a new one issued.

No need to get new SSN(SAN is one time job), only thing she can get the restriction removed from the SSN, but since again that restriction removal in not permanent so no need to do any thing. May be after GC you may want to remove the restriction.

My wife had the same exact same situation. In our case, we never got to know the SSN that was created by SSA for DMV. When she got her interim EAD, she applied at the local SSA for an SSN. She got one in 2 weeks - no questions asked. Anyway, why don't you ask the SSA if they can remove the restriction.

Thank you all ...hopefully there is a form at the SSN office for removing the restriction??? or would just a phone call do??

Yesterday, wife and I went to the local SS office as she begins work on EAD today.

Took an hour or so; the lady physically took the old SS card (which mentions - Not valid for employment - many moons ago california issued such SS numbers for driver's licence) and said the new one will be mailed to us in a couple of weeks.

She took a photocopy of the EAD card - (nothing else).

On asking a question whether the same number can be used in applications for jobs etc. she said yes - the number is valid - the new card will have the same number without restrictions.
