Can the spouse of the primary applicant take up a consulting job which would pay directly on a hourly rate? Is it possible to do that without getting the green card?

My wife was working for a company (not consulting though) with her EAD and was paid on hourly basis. That is the main advantage of filing for 140 and 485 concurrently!
