Hello!

A friend of mine (US citizen) is getting married in India. Since his spouse has an indian passport, does anyone know the approximate time to bring his wife to the US on a fiance visa/spouse visa? What are the pros/cons?

Thanks!

Check out information on K3 visa (I-130).
Once married you cannot apply for K1 (I-129F) Visa. as a spouse is no longer fiance.
If possible also look for information on DCF. Stay in India for 60 days and start processing for spouse. Rahul Kumar has contributed very good information on this.

If the marriage has not taken place, it is best to bring her on Fiance visa and get married here. The wait time for Fiance visa is shorter 6-9 months. The con here is that your friend would have to overcome social hurdles.

K3 visa takes 1.5-2 years time to process. The problem is the torturous wait. I have been told that the consulate does not even issue tourist visa in such cases.

From my personal research here are some unsolicited comments.
1. If his spouse can obtain a work visa and come to US on her own, that would be great.
2. Student visa is another option, but she may run into hurdles later.

So in short ask your friend to take a deep breath and consider K1. :)

After sending my post, I revisited the timeline for K1, K3 visa at all the 4 servie centers. Except for Nebraska, all the service centers are doing well with K3 Visa April-May 2005. NSC is doing April 1, 2005 for K1, Mar 2003 for K3.

So if your friend is not in NSC, he is all set.
