Sponsor Birth Certificate - how important?

I am a USC sponsoring my husband... we are currently waiting for an interview call. Based on what I have read on this forum, one of the documents required during interview is the Birth Certificate of the sponsor. I have a two fold question regarding the BC -

1. Is the BC of the sponsor really required or is it one of those 'better to take with you than not' things?

2. Are the requirements for the sponsor BC as strict as those for the immigrant BC as specified by I-485? Can the sponsor use the DoB on US Passport as a proof?

I was seaching and couldn't find my BC, so if we will really need this, I better start thinking about how to get one. On the other hand if I can use my US Passport instead... that will be cool!

Although sponsor's birth cert. is listed as a "must-bring" on the interview letter, during the interview the officer didn't request it from us and told us "all I need is the birth cert. of the person who wants the green card".

We carry my husband's BC because we used that as proof of USC on the forms. So if you used your passport as proof of your US citizenship on the forms then bring that with you.

I think that on these days you can even order your BC from the place of your records online or by mail.

I never read the part of the sponsor's BC a must bring unless you use it as part of your applications since you need to bring the originals of your supportive documents.

You can just go to city hall and ask for a copy of your birth certificate, I think the first copy is for free.

Normally in your interview notice there is a list of things, but if you look at the AOS interview timeline threat (made by Ari4u) there is a link about it.
Not all immigration officers at the interview will ask for the same documents that is at their discretion, but you should bring the documents anyway since you don't know which one in particular they will ask you.

Thank you all for your replies... I will try to get my BC. If anyone else has had an experience where the absence of sponsor's BC caused a problem or a raised eyebrow during the interview, please share.

It should only a visit to city hall but make sure you go asap since depending on the city hall they will either give you the BC right there or they will tell you you will get it in the mail (10 days more or less). It's true, you can get it online too but that's more expensive. Just give them a call.
 
At my interview, my wife's (USC) was required and asked for.
A copy is fine, but I would definitely do anything to obtain a copy. City hall or another agency should be able to give you one.
 
I have a question regarding submitting Birth Certificate for 485. I currently have only a photocopy of it. Does it suffice or do I need the original to submit to INS? Please advise.

To answer your question... you need to submit only copies with the application. Make sure you carry the original for the interview.
