Speeding ticket between interview and oath

I received a speeding citation on the same day I received the letter to attend the oath ceremony. The letter asks for any citations after the interview date. I can either pay the speeding fine now or go to the court hearing. I plan to mention my speeding citation on the form they told me to bring to the oath ceremony. Could this cause my citizenship oath to be delayed?

Is it better for me to pay the fine now instead of attending the court hearing for the speeding citation? The court hearing is a month after the oath ceremony date.

What paperwork related to this citation should I take with me to the oath ceremony?

I am in N Virginia - the oath ceremony is about 2.5 months after the interview. I had cleared the interview with congratulations ...

My opinion is to pay the speeding fine, specially that the court date is after the date of the oath ceremony. What you can do, is pay it, and make sure you get a proof of payment that you owe the government nothing. That's all the USCIS cares about when it comes to speeding tickets. as a violation, it's not a problem, but if you attended the ceremony but haven't paid the ticket - therefore the court charges would be pending- then the USCIS could hold you up or you could face difficulties. I would say you can post your case on this forum as the moderator is an immigration lawyer, he should know better than me. Here is the link, by the way, the lawyer would post a reply message to you the same day for free !

Sony55,

I don't think that you should plead guilty (by paying the fine) if peteg60 wants to contest the ticket. All that I would do is at the ceremony show the ticket and tell them that you plan to contest it at the court on a later day.

In America, you should not be obligated to plead guilty to get naturalized. You should always have the right to naturalization even with a pending decision on something as stupid as a ticket.

Not really. USCIS is likely to hold the oath until the issue is resolved. You don't have to plead guilty, however. You can visit court, pay the fine with receipt, and still schedule court hearing to contest the ticket. This way you are clean in the eyes of USCIS and still have a chance to avoid "points" on the driving record.

I would not mention it at all

If I were you I would not mention it at all. There is no way for INS to find out you have a speeding ticket. IMHO.

Not good advice FoxyIdiot. The form specifically asks if you have a citation. Not declaring amounts to lying and if somehow discovered down the road citizenship can be revoked.

Peteg60 what happened? Can you post your experience of the oath?
