SPAM: Outsourcing to increase in 2003

Gartner, the fool

It is not the question of mere english.
Standing example is me. Many people over here "thinks" I am poor in English.
But I got outstanding in Technical performance :D:D It is this which is keeping in job. There was convent educated lady ( with little analysis power ) in the team and was the FIRST to loose the job ....

Indians are basically smart and more qualified than many others

The assumption that 'analysis' and 'Good english' have to be mutually exclusive is, at best, flawed.

And then, to think that only 'Indians' are analytical is racist, to say the least.

One of the reasons outsourcing to India looks good for US companies is the cheap technically talented and english speaking folks. There are excellent technically talented folks in other countries too (like Russia, China and Japan).
I think it is a question of time before other countries start to undercut India - like the textile, leather and Granite industry back home.

My views

Why does most of the outsourcing go to India?

a) Indians are hardworking. Not to say others are not, but Indians have an extra good reason to be (c'mon you know how things are back there if you don't get a good education).

b) Indians are cheap and dollars are expensive and sought after.

c) Indians have a natural aptitude towards mathematical analytical stuff. Chess/Computers/GRE/GMAT scores. Aryabhatta, zero .. look at our math books and then look at math books from anywhere else. One exception Russia, their physics courses are pretty advanced (Anyone remember IR IRODOV - Basic physics?)

d) We speak english. Good english, better than most english speakers here. (Though read point a) below).

e) We have our priorities correct and set right (for the most part).

What we do lack ..

a) Personalities.
b) Zest and firepower like the pakistani cricket team.
c) Leadership. (Mahatma Gandhi was 60 years back).
d) Adaptability to change.
e) Acceptance of other ideas contradicting to ours.
f) Nosiness in other's business.
g) Still servile attitude towards white skin.
h) Education/Health/Basic amenities for the masses.
i) A good atmosphere to work back in India (Politics, power outages, mosquitoes etc.)

And shantanu, English does matter. But neither english, nor techie skills, are the key to success, you need to have the right combo, along with grey matter to support it ..

Y'know .. lots of us have that.
