I have a strange situation here. I used to be in California so I carried CA driving license till late even though I moved to east coast a while ago. Now my driver's license is going to expire pretty soon. :)

Fortunately, I was eligible for auto renewal in CA so I got the auto renewal form in mail. I filled it in and sent it to CA DMV thinking that I will get my new one before the current one expires. But I didn't get the new one in time so I went to the local DMV and did an out-of-state transfer. It took just 10mts to get my new license and they took my current CA license.

Over the weekend I got the renewed license from CA in mail. So now I have 2 licenses. Can I have 2 linceses at the same time? If not, I will cancel either one. Your comments are welcome.
Thanks,
Sri

You can have two license from two different states. But in that case you have obtain those licenses independently - I mean going for driving tests. But in your case, you got your new license based on your CA license. And your local DMV is going to notify for license cancellation to CA DMV anyway. Therfore, though you have CA valid license card, but that might not be valid after CA gets that notification from your local DMV.

Technically you are NOT allowed to have two driving licenses. You should have a driving license only from the state where you have established your primary residence. If you have two, you should surrender one (out of state one) to the local DMV.

Interestingly, a friend of mine carries his international driving permit everytime he rents a car, apparently speeding tickets don't get on your record if you get tickets on the IDP. Illegal but it happens.

Carrying IDP is okay but when the cop stops for speeding and if some one shows international driving permit, in most of the cases the cop will ask if the person has a US driving permit. If the person lies to the cop then can get into more trouble.

Are you sure about it? DL is provided to the residents of the state, that's true - but that's not necessarily have to be "primary". If you pay resident tution/propety tax, you are resident. I would be curious to know if there is law or document that says it's "illegal" to have two DLs from two different states. DL law is state law and there is no Federal rule that can supersede any this state law (In addition, one state rule cannot be imposed another state). Now, it's possible there some states that have "state rule" that they provide DL to only "primary" residents. But I am not aware of them.

PA law from
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/new_residents/index.shtml

"All new residents must obtain a Pennsylvania Driver’s License within 60 days after moving to Pennsylvania. You must surrender your out-of-state driver’s license (valid or expired six months or less) and/or Identification card before PennDOT can issue you a PA License."

PA, definitely does not allow for multiple DLs.

Thanks for your replies guys. I will turn one license in. Here the local DMV does not impose any timeframe to get DL once one becomes the resident likw Pennsylvania. It also accepts the out-of-state expired license upto 1 year. :)

I know some of my friends doing the same thing with IDP. Whenever they rent a car they use IDP. :D

yes depends on state to state...ca dmv punches out expiration dates on out of state DLs while giving Ca DL and informs other state too.
