Hi,
Am repeating my previous query, please advice!
I searched through the forum and found that if you file for H1 extension before your current I-94 expires then you get an automatic extension of 240 days before you receive the actual H1 extension approval document.
My questions are:
What is this 240-day extension? I mean, what is the document that they send you?
Does the document have an I-94 stamp?
How soon do they send this after receiving your application?
Can i use this document to renew my driver's license? My current license expires on the date of my I-94 expiry.
Does all this apply to H4 dependents as well?
Finally, how long is it taking these days to get the actual H1 extension approval from Vermont Service Center.

Thanks for any input.

240 days extension is granted when USCIS receives your application to extend your H1B application. Note, it doesn't have to be approved in order to continue work. No the document doesnt have an I-94 stamp, it only contains the normal application notice. Vermont is quite faster, I would say about 3 weeks, you get such Notice of Action letter. No, you cannot use this notice to go and ask for DL renew, as it doesn't contain your new I-94. You need to check when the H4 dependent I-94 expires, and if it expires same as yours, then you need seprate application for their extension as well. I would say within 2 months, you will hear something from VSC about the application.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
However, it is quite frustrating that i cannot renew my drivers license on the basis of this 240-day extension. I have small baby and it is almost impossible to go through the winter months without a vehicle.
You mean to say that i cannot drive till i receive the actual approval. It is so strange that the USCIS does not send any documented proof to indicate the grant of the 240 day extension? Is it automatically understood then?
Thanks again though. Shall await your confirmation on the above query.

DMV wont extend your DL until they have proof that you have vaild I-94. DMV wont understand on how USCIS works, they work on the basis of proof. They dont have any access to USCIS database. I understand your feeling which is not totally cool. You may hit DMV and ask if they will entertain your request, which I doubt they will.

Thanks again, for the humor as well. Nevertheless, I shall give it a try, by verbal request, i mean.
Best wishes
