I just got some good news that I thought I should pass on in case someone else is in the same situation.
I sent in my N-400 ( Manchester NH local office ) in March 2005. My GC expires in April 2006. It is now December, and so far I have only been fingerprinted. No further communication received.
I called the 1-800 number several times asking what I should do if the N400 is not complete before the GC expires. Each time I called, they told me that although I had filed more than 6 months before the expiration of the GC, I needed to apply for a new one, and pay $260 !!!, in case the N400 did not come through in time. I need some form of GC in April 05 as they won't let me renew my drivers license without one.
I decided to talk to the district office directly via infopass and they told me not to apply, but come back the week before my GC expires and they'll put an extension stamp in my passport.
Hope this post saves a few people $260!!
