Soft update vs Hard update?

In several thread and posts all over the net, I see people saying their status got a soft update. What is it actually and how can you tell?

Is it somewhere on the screen that you go to check your status online?

Thanks.

From what I can tell, a soft update is an internal change on your case that may not show up at the USCIS website. A hard update is more like when USCIS sends you an actual piece of mail, or your case changes status.

This is a 5-year-old thread, and the USCIS website may have changed since then, but it discusses hard vs. soft updates. After reading that thread, it seems to me that being concerned with this level of detail is not helpful for one's mental health. :)

What is not clear to me is: Does one get different levels of details about their case if they sign up for an account at the USCIS website, versus just checking their case status at the website?

-edit- If you sign up for an account at USCIS website and add your case number to your portfolio, you see this message, which seems to be describing a soft update:
* Note on "Last Updated" date:
Your case may have a new "Last Updated" date and you may receive an Email and/or text message notification of your case being updated, without the status of the case changing. This is due to internal USCIS processing being performed on your Case. This will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date, but may not result in a different status message

When you signup at USCIS website, you can enroll for email or text messages updates so USCIS site will send you message as and when there are any changes.

I thinks soft update means there are some updates that would generate status change on website and send email/text but no paper mails for eg. "In Q 4 Interview Scheduling", "In Q 4 Oath Scheduling" whereas hard update means a paper mail would follow for eg. "Now you are scheduled for Interview and you would receive notice in mail", "Now you are scheduled for Oath...."

It is my understanding and in my opinion, I wouldn't worry about all technicalities unless I don't see any updates for 2 months. In general, for best case scenario, it would be over in 3-4 months whereas worst case scenario would take 6-8 months" so don't worry much about it.
