i am planning to apply for US passport for my kid ,is it must to have social security number to apply for the passport[has A#]since i was using IRS # for the taxes, i am planning to get ssn soon i hope it will take 2-3 wks to get the card,any info regarding this is helpful.

If your kid was born in the US, the kid must already have an SSN since the hospital where the kid was born takes care of the necessary paper work. Regardless, if you need to get SSN, it takes about 10 working days to get one.

What's an "IRS #". Unless something has changed, you need an SSN for all kids 2 and up in order to get a deduction for them on your taxes.

That's not right. You can claim deductions with Tax Payer ID, which I think the original poster is calling IRS #. The rule has been in place for years.
 
And I believe it's been in place because not all children can get a social security number (dependent visas, for example).

However, if you're going to apply for a passport for your child, you should have gotten a SS# at some point along the way (when the child became a permanent resident, etc). Either way, apply for it now. They're incredibly efficient...they'll have a card in your mailbox in 2 weeks at the most.
 
Thank you all for replying to my post. I didn't get SSN as soon as my kid got the green card only now i realised that we need SSN to apply for the passport , i will take the SSN and then apply. After getting passport i need to do the name change through the court and get again the passport .Thanks again for keeping this form very informative .
