Social Security Number Theft

Hi guys
I know this issue doesn't directly address the purpose of this forum but anyway. Yesterday I went to the Department of Human Services where my social worker declared that my social security number was stolen and there are now three (!!!!!!) persons working under my number wich I was assigned in September 2004 after getting asylum status in August 2004. The most ridiculous is that their records show that all these people (all mexicans ,according to names) use MY number since April 2003. I was really pissed-off, because I still don't work but I already have about 12000-16000$ earnings in my records. I was in SS Administration but still nothing, I was told that they can't help me and I was only given a statement saying that that SSN is mine. Today I reported SSN abuse to Federal Trade Commission and the lady I spoke to was very nice and advised me to go to the local police office to report all this things. I don't know what to do. Maybe some of you, guys, had the same experience in the past. what should I do? Thanks

You did the right thing by reporting the case to the FTC. It happens.

You can call SSA and confirm that it is your name against your SSN. Make sure the address is also correct on their records. I think in this day and age, you need to call and check your records once every 6 months or at least once a year.

I had a similar experience. My wife was assigned a SS number after we got our green cards. When we applied for credit in her name it was refused and the credit card issuer told us that another person's name appears against my wife's SS number. We then contacted SSA office, got a letter verifying her SS number and wrote to all credit bureaus explaining the situation. The credit bureaus have now updated their records to show my wife's name for that SS number.
Someone from "across the border" was using her number since 1965!

Thanks a lot for your replies. The SSA issued me a statement indicating that this number belongs to me and all the information with address etc. is OK.
nkm-oct23 Could you, please, explain what you mean with credit bureaus? Experian, Equifax and TransUnion ? Thanks

Wow! This is scary stuff. I wonder why they are assigning SSNs that have been used previously or why they don't check the number before assigning it!

Anyway, I was going to suggest you request the SSN Administration to send you Earnings Worksheet/Statement every year. This little report lists the number of years you've worked and the total $ earned each of those years. It also informs you of your eligibility to get disability, medicare, social security assistance, etc. It is VERY helpful in determining fraud, because the dollar amount of each year should match what you filed. Any thing more is a clear indication of fraud or error.

Hope this helped a little. Take care.

You can also check your Credit Reports(EQ,EX,TU) every day at this website: www.privacyguard.com it's only $1 for 2 months, after that is $79/year, but you can cancel anytime before the 2 months trial ends!
I hope this helps.
Boa sorte!!!

Thanks a lot, guys, for your information and help. I hope It will enable me to stop all these people using my SSN. Thanks again!
