social security number after I485 approved

My wife and I were recently approved for I485 and got the temp stamps on
our passports last week. My wife was on H4 and therefore had no SSN, just
a tax payer ID. Now that she was granted to become a permanent resident,
can she obtain a SSN now? Or, is it a must or you don't need?

Advise please.
Thanks.

Sure she can get one. It is required for work, and for tax stuff. I don't know if it is ok to continue to use the tax id for tax filings, but it sure could result in a bunch of problems with IRS, so it is the best to use the SSN from now on and tell IRS about it.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want no trouble with IRS so I think we will
visit a SSN office.

I looked at my SSN card for the first time since last century and noticed
it says "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION". But I believe
this is not the case any more with the I551 stamp on my passport. Do I
need to do something about it?

Your wife can get a SSN as soon as she has employment authorization document.
