Social Security Card issue

I got my SSN long time ago when I came here as a young student on a F1 visa. There was no "Not Authorized For Work" statement on my card, because SSA wasn't even required to print it on the card yet. My card is as clean as the regular one.

Now that I am approved of GC, do I need to inform SSA of my status change? Obviously I don't need a new card, but when I applied for the card back then, I did showed them my passport and student visa as identification. I wonder if that was still in their computer record, and whether I should notify them or not.

You should get a new SS card without that legend.

A SSN card without work permit limit legend is
useful when you use SSN card and a Driver license
to establish work eligibility.

My SSN card does not permit me to work, but I now have permission. What do I do?

Question

When I first applied for a Social Security card, I was issued a card that says, "Not Valid for Employment" and I now have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Will I be issued a different number, or will I have to apply to adjust my current number?

Answer

If you are now a U.S. citizen or if the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has granted you a change in status which changes your work status in the U.S., you need to apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will have the same number as your current card.

To apply for a replacement card, you need to complete Form SS-5 which is available for download at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html
Or you may obtain Form SS-5 by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting your local Social Security office.

You will need to submit Form SS-5 with evidence of your identity and proof of your U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work from the DHS. Your immigration document may be acceptable as evidence of both your identity and authorization to work in the United States. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency.

We cannot accept photocopies of documents. We need original documents or copies certified by the custodian of the record. Notarized copies are also not acceptable.

If you’re a noncitizen, we must verify your documents with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) before we issue a replacement SSN card. We will issue the card within two days of receiving verification from DHS. Most of the time, we can quickly verify your documents online with DHS. If DHS can’t verify your documents online, it may take several weeks or months to respond to Social Security's request.

For more details, please see the answer to the Frequently Asked Question, How is SSA protecting Social Security numbers?

We suggest that you take your application and immigration documents to your nearest Social Security office rather than mail them. You can find that office at: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/locator/.

jkuo44,
Even if your card is clean, you should notify SSA to update their record. My card had the words so I went to apply for a new card, they told me that they will order a new card as well as update my records as a PR. I think it has something to do with establishing eligibility for future SS benefits.

I received my card when I was on H1B, "authorized to work by INS" written on it, I went yesterday to the SSN office they took my application. I asked them about my wife's card, my wife card is clean, she got it when she was on EAD, they said she need not aplly for new card.
Do you guys think it is right ??

Bindaas,
Technically, they are correct that your wife does not need a new card. But, did they update her record? My wife got her card while on EAD and still she had those words. So, she had to get a new card anyway.
You should call SSA and try to get a confirmation from them.

This is my opinion only.

The only way you have SSA update your SS record
is to get a new SSN card by filing SS-5

If you already have a no-legend card, they will
issue a new one and they may or may not take the
old one. If they don't ask you to hand in back the old
one, then lucky you get two SSN cards (you
can get another one when you become
a citizen)

What's so lucky about having 2 (or 3) SSN cards?

When you accidently destroy one or wear the one out,
you don't have to go to SSA to get another one. And
it takes 2 weeks to get a replacement card anyway, if you don't
surrender your old card, you don't have to worry
about in these two weeks you have to use the card
anyhow.

You store all your 3 cards at the same place
so that you won't increase teh chance that
you lose at least one.
