I won the Diversity Visa Lottery and arrived to the States a month ago; I have been applying to many jobs but still can't get any because they all ask me to provide them with my Social Security Number, which I have not been given. Will I get a Social Security Card? When? Or is it that I must be the one to process it? Help me please because I am running out of money. I have no support and do not really know what is going on with my case.

you have to apply to any SS office. i did it the 2nd day arrived and recieved it within one week. don't wait any more.

You need to find a Social Security Administration office near you and go there to apply for one. I think you can get the number right away but the actual card will come in about 2 weeks!

Find your local SS office by putting the zip code at the following website and physically go there and apply. Make sure to take all of your IDs and important docs like passport.

I'm a green card winner in 2009, my interview was successful, and would like to ask, is that possible to activate the SSN after a year I received my green card? The reason is because I'd need to serve my current employer in my country for another year before i can go to the states to live there for long term.

So where did you have your interview? Overseas or in the US? Anyways, if you have your greencard, you can apply for your SS card. You don't have to get it when you are applying for job, just get it and keep it. You would need a mailing address where it will be mailed. Also, you are suppose to file for taxes. You might want to check what you file for if you had no income in the US!

Hi cooldude06_78,

Thanks for the response. Well in my currently situation, I'd like to delay to activate my SSN it's because I need to serve my current employer for one year, as it's written in the contract. I was having my interview in my country's US Embassy, I'll travel to US to activate my green card in March 2010 and believe the green card will be sent to my friend's mailbox as the mailing address given to the immigration officer.

My major concern is, am i allow to activate the SSN after 1 year I received my green card? Besides the job market in US is really bad, If you have any offer, please let me know hehe I work with computers/IT industry.

Do I have to pay the income tax to the US goverment when my SSN isn't activated?

Please response thank you very much!

You are liable for US federal and state taxes on your world-wide income from the day you enter the US on your immigrant visa.
(BTW, you do not activate your "green card". You are activating your immigrant visa. The green card application is only started AFTER you have entered the US.)
You will need to submit federal and state tax returns declaring all income earned inside and outside the US between March 2010 and December 2010.
Whether you apply for an SSN or not does not affect your liability for tax. You should apply for a SSN in March. There is no disadvantages to having an SSN and you will absolutely need it to get things like a driver's license, connect utilities and to develope a credit score. The sooner you get it the better.

I'd say, soon as you enter the US (preferably the next day if its a week day), go round the nearest SSA office and apply for your SSN. It should be with you asap (in my case 2 weeks). You can leave the country and return to complete your job. Having the SSN with you wont harm you. Not having it with you when you need it (say you a sudden great opportunity comes up in the US !!!) will.

I also work in the IT industry. I left the US after getting my SSN and GC to complete my job, but made sure I travelled back to the US within a year. At the time IT recruitment was bad, so it was great to have a job to go back to and a bit more money for resettling. Right now though, IT recruitment has picked up a whole lot.

Just dont delay in applying for your SSN
