Hi All, I am a new member to this form.
My wife's skin test is positive, but the x-ray is good. The doctor said that she needs to take prventive medicine. The preventive medicine has serious side effects and we don't want to take it. Does INS require this medication? The x-ray showed that she is fine.

Please help

If the doc certifies that she free of TB then INS doesn't care. Just like in my case, skin test was positive but the x-ray cleared. The doc did not ask me for any medicine and INS did not either.

Hi hassoon,

I am a new comer also and planning on medical examination soon. Could you please share us some info of your medical examination?

1) How much did the examination cost?
2) Did you have to put all the vaccines which INS recommends?

Thanks

My info

I did my medical test in San Jose, It costed me 118 and my wife the same, so total $236, then we had to do x-ray for my wife, this is extra 30$.

I did not have to take any new vaccine, I had prove from back home. I only took the skin test and showed the doctor the proof I have. In all cases, any of these vaccination is $20.

Hi Hassoon,

Thank you so much for your information which is very helpful.

How about the 'SEROLOGIC (BLOOD) TEST' which is "
Required of ALL APPLICANTS 15 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER. The serologic test will include tests for the virus that causes the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). [End_of_Quote]"? Have you done this before in our home country? or the Doctor you visited here just simply waived you from being tested?

My case is that I have this test done FIVE years ago in my home country and I guess the Doctor may have to put the gun on me--forcing me to take the test again--just bringing in some extra money(around $100 for blood test only?).

Thanks!

I had a positive for the TB test too & the doc had prescribed me INH for 9 months though my XRay was clear...I thought the probable reason for the positive is BCG vaccines that are given in India, during our childhoods...

I wasnt satisfied & so checked out with my PCP - whom I trust well - after some thought, he suggested that I do take the medicine - his reasoning - in my case, I had a 20mm wide bump...He thinks BCG might have caused a possible 5-10 mm bump, but 20 mm is large...so its safer to take the medicine...

So I suggest that you talk to ur PCP about it, if you trust him...INS probably doesnt care if you are clear on the XRay - but you could check with a trusted doctor about this, simply for your health...

you have not mentioned how big your "bump" was - but if beyond 5-6 mm, maybe you should consult your PCP...Your PCP will conduct liver tests on monthly basis, since INH has possible liver side effects...You can stop medication is you have any side effects...

Main point - consult ur PCP if the bump was beyond 5-6 mm

HIV blood test was included

About the question about the HIV blood test, the doctor sent us to a lab to take it, but the cost was included in the $118/person. We did not have to pay extra money.

Thanks drkamath

Thanks for your reply, I think the pumb was more than 6mm. I will consult with a doctor.

Chest X-Ray conclusive

If the chest x-ray is clear then there should not be any need to take any further medication. The chest x-ray is the final source of proof. Usually the BCG vaccinations given as children cause those bumps on our hands inspite of not having TB.

Check with your doctor if worried, but don't think it is something to worry about if your chest x-ray was clear.
