Hello,
My father immigrated to the USA from Indonesia in 1950.
While visiting Indonesia, a relative introduced me to Johan, a dark-skinned, 23 year old minister of the "Bethel Maranatha Church" (one of several evangelical Protestant churches unique to Indonesia).
Johan was introduced to me as a state boxing champion, who left boxing to become a minister.
Later (after it became clear that I did not feel any need of being "saved by Jesus") Johan asked me for advice on obtaining a visa to work in the US. He had a friend who "saved much money" as a factory worker in the US, and was interested in any similar position.
I told Johan that this was difficult. I have no useful connections, and he has no special job skills, and his church has no US connections.
Later, it occurred to me that maybe Johan's advanced boxing skill might qualify him for one of the following strategies:
a) Win several Indonesian amateur US-style boxing tourments. (Johan is confident that he can do this.) With these credentials, seek sponsorship by a US college offering sports scholarships?
b) Or seek sponsorship and employment assistance by some US boxing club?
c) Or just join a US boxing tournament. Then apply for a visa to attend the tournament. Then hope to find some sponsorship connections at the tournament?
Johan, age 23, has a high school diploma and a 2-year seminary school diploma.
Johan has mastered the basics of English. His pronunciation and vocabulary need work. He has no money to speak of. So I offered to post this forum message.
Any advice appreciated.
