Significance of Priority Date

What is the significance of Priority Date during I-485 processing? Is it by any chance used by INS to determine when a case will be picked up by an officer during I-485 AOS stage?

Just curious to know.

Priority dates were significant during the days when the GC quota was filled early by countries like China and India. Now thanks to ISN and others they have become insignificant.
 
There was a time when priority date determined when a person is eligible to apply I485 application upon approval of I140. Now everyone is current. So PD has little relevance.
 
The priority date has no importance as of today since priority date is current for everyone and per country limit doesn't affect since visas unsed by some countries will be used by others.

But priority date will play a significant role even if you applied for I-485 and priority dates retrogress.
Priority date matters till I-485 is adjudicated.
