Significance of a passport stamp

Hi guys

I have recieved mixed information about this so I was wondering if you guys could help clear things up. I had my GC interview in San Francisco on June 19th. Things went well and IO told me that she was approving my case but I would have to wait as my name check was not complete. She said that they dont stamp passports anymore and I would receive my greencard as soon as my name check was complete. She took my I94 at the time and asked me to check in 90 days if I didnt receive my green card. I did check back with an info pass exactly 90 days later and they told me that the name check had still not come through and I would have to wait. I have not applied for AP or EAD yet as my current H1B (on my passport) is valid till July 2007. I have 2 questions:

1. If I had a passport stamp what would that do? Will this cause issues as I am travelling to India in December. The IO had told me that I would be able to travel on my H1 as long as it was valid. I had also mentioned to my IO that my H1 stamp was on my old passport which was stapled to my new passport but the IO had mentioned that as long as I carried both passports I shouldnt have any problems. I am a bit worried about this as I dont even have an I94 attached to my passport now, since they took it.

2. My case status online says that our case is at the Missouri service center. Is that good or bad?

From what I've read on these boards it seems that they do stamp passports sometimes if you ask for it. The stamp is supposed to allow you to do everything that the actual greencard does -- work, travel etc. However, in your case, since your namecheck hadn't cleared yet, it is my understanding that they wouldn't have been able to stamp your passport even if they had wanted to -- because part of the approval process wasn't finished yet.

I should know more about all this after our interview in San Francisco tomorrow. I haven't received my EAD yet and intend to ask for a stamp in my passport so I can start working as soon as possible. My namecheck has been cleared, however, so perhaps they will be able to give me a stamp. Let's see.

Good luck, and I hope you receive your green card soon.

Sudhany: Thanks for clearing up why my passport wasnt stamped. But since they took my I94 will that cause issues when I am leaving the US? I know that I will get a new I94 on my H1B when I get back. Also, Can anyone answer my second question? Thanks a lot in advance.

Not sure about the I-94 thing. Could you make an Infopass appointment to ask about that? You might also be able to get a bit more information about what's happening with the namecheck.

Regarding the Missouri Service Center: isn't that where everything's initially processed at? All my NOAs have been from the Missouri Service Center -- including the one for the interview. Don't know if that helps you.

All the best!
