Should a newly-naturalized citizen sign his US passport using the same abbreviated signature as on driver's license and bank/traveler's checks,
or is he required to use his full signature?

Put the one that you use everyday, checks DL etc.
Yes, I also recommend using everyday short form of signature. However, the pamphlet that comes with the passport suggests to put a true and full signature of the holder. So, what is it? The answer would be - nobody cares. The whole confusion arises from the fact that the concept of signature in the American culture is somewhat messed up. It was a long tradition here (espcially for those coming from the WASP background) to sign ones full name legibly in cursive. In other cultures, including many European ones, people simply put some illegible scribble as a signature. For one, in my home country signing your full name in cursive would be considered retarded :) That's why I was taken aback by the IO's request at the N-400 interview to sign the form legibly in cursive. I even asked him if he wants me to use a signature that I have never used in my life, and he said, "Yes". Thus, naturalisation certificate is the only document where I basically spelled out my full name in cursive. Everything else - DL, passport, SSN, etc - have my short scribble.

My signature was oriignally legible but became bess and less and eventually one day a check I wrote triigered a inquiry from teh bank saying teh signature on teh check and one on their record did not
match. I had to go to teh bank and changed my signature in tehior record
