There is a rule that at the time of getting the GC, you have to have the good faith intent to work for the sponsoring employer indefinitely.

While I filed all the papers, I have no memory of reading such a rule on paper. Do you know where I can find details of this rule? I mean a web link or some place? I am not in hotwater because I worked for the sponsoring employer more than an year after getting the GC. Any ideas? TIA

Joef is right concerning good faith intent to work for the sponsoring employer indefinitely. Different lawyers/forums in the past have interpreted this to mean 3-6 months or more.

Generally, while some (2-4) pay stubs will serve as good documentation (in any interview process), it is useful to have letter 1722 from the IRS showing a record at least 5 tax years. Obviously, if applicable, a 1722 showing more than 5 years would be great.

In the event that a job switch was made even after the GC change, it is not the end of the world. A review of this and other forums indicates that this was a major issue in the past. But with the GC rule changes some years ago, INS has shown considerable flexibility on this issue.
In many cases, this issue doesn't even come up.
In the minority cases, when it does come up, you will have to offer an explanation.

Company going bankrupt, being laid off, family emergency causing you to leave company and be unemployed for several weeks are some of the INS accepted valid reasons for job change.

You may also want to consult a lawyer to prepare documentation explaining the job change (immediately after getting GC), just in case this question comes up.

What if someone was unable to find job after being laid off by the sponsoring company? Till the time when the person applies for citizenship, will this prolonged unemployment create any problem?

Given the high unemployment rate with some industries such as IT, there is a whole bunch of people being unemployed for several years already.

What will be the best approach to deal with such situation?

Also, with the lack of pay stubs (due to unemployment), how does the person proof his/her residency in the country?
The tax return is another issue as well.
