Should I renew my GC?

I'm in the process of filling out the N-400 and will probably mail it some time this week or next week. However, my GC is expiring 1/5/2014. My parents and I didn't realize the 10-year period was already coming to an end and are now trying to naturalize as citizens. Should I renew my GC as it's expiring in less than a month or just continue applying for citizenship? Will there be delays in the process if I don't? Any advice is appreciated.

If you apply for citizenship and don't apply to renew your GC, if you face a strict interviewer they may insist that you renew it and place your case on hold until you provide proof of applying for renewal. If you had more than 6 months remaining on the GC when you applied for citizenship, you would be entitled to free I-551 extensions, but that doesn't apply to you because you have less than 1 month remaining so if you're going to renew you'll have to pay for it.

So you can apply for citizenship without GC renewal and hope that you don't face a strict interviewer like that, or apply for GC renewal alone, or apply for both.
