Short-term work, H1B an EAD question

Imagine I have H1B and EAD. I would like to avoid using EAD until I-140 is processed.

Then a company (unrelated to my employer) invites me to perform a work there only for a couple of weekends. Let's say they will pay me $3,000.

At this stage, do I have to use the EAD and end my H1B status to accept this type of short-term work ?

Yes -- if you want to accept any employment outside of your H-1B, EAD is the only option.

And using EAD, automatically terminates H1 status -- so you need to use EAD for your H1 job as well.
