folks,

my case history for anyone who is curious:
applied for immigration: sept 2001
request for updated documents: sept 2002
got medical forms: sept 2002
sent medical forms to Ottawa: oct 2002
sent updated employment letters and bank statement: nov 2002
request for passport: jan 2003

i have a question regarding sending my passport to the buffalo consulate for stamping. i was in the us when i applied for canadian immigration and now i have come back to india. but i still use my friend's address in the us. now, i need to send my passport to my friend who has the request letter for my passport and the grey envelope in which the passport has to be sent to buffalo office. couriers like fedex, dhl are not accepting the passport to be send by mail to buffalo, from india.

1. what is the way i can send the passport now? i have to send it within 30 days. any other mode of sending it by mail? any other reliable courier company or indian post office's speed post/ems?

2. can i send my passport through a distant friend who is going to the us on a business visa? is it legal to send your passport through someone who is travelling outside the country? given the situation now in the us, if they do an extensive search, will he be held legally? i dont want to cause trouble to my friend. can he just keep mum about the whole thing and carry the passport? but if caught, what can he say to defend himself?

if anyone knows what can be done in such situations or been in a situation like this, please let me know on what can be done and answers to my questions at your earliest, thanks a bunch to this forum.

Complex situation. Why dont you contact canadian embassy in India personally and ask if they can stamp ur passport in India itself. I think they can assess all the information about you in their computer. There must be something which can be done rather than sending passport outside.

sending passport outside india for stamping????

folks, i found this article in this forum itself and i have checked my passport and it does clearly say the following:

If you have Indian Passport please check the CAUTION (the last page of the passport):

PASSPORT SHOULD NOT BE SENT OUT OF ANY COUNTRY BY POST. IT SHOULD BE IN THE CUSDODY OF EITHER OF THE HOLDER OR OF A PERSON AUTHORISED BY THE HOLDER.

so i guess one can send the passport outside india through an authorized representative as long as they have proof that you have authorized them. now, the question is what kind of proof of authorization do they look for? just a letter from the passport holder to the person carrying the passport or does it have to signed by notarized public on a stamp paper or something of that sort. can anyone through some light on this authorization mode?
