Self employment or W2 job on GC-EAD

quick questions.
do i still need to be on payroll to keep my GC-EAD status?

1- if no then when GC date become current, will there be any issue ?

2- if yes, can i open my own firm and run payroll from it. will it impact my GC processing ?
 
No. But if you are immigrating based on an employment-based petition (I-140) filed by a company, then the company must offer to employ you when you get your green card, in order for you to immigrate on it (unless your I-485 has been pending for more than 180 days, in which case you just need to be employed in a similar job).
