Selective Services is taking too Long

I sent the "request for status info letter" on 30th Aug. I have their stamped Postal service receipt with SSA stamp of 08/31/09

Today I called after 3.5 months and the guy says that they are processing earlier dates and he cannot commit date. Does it take so long? The on line version merely says that they don't have a record. is this sufficient?

Are you over 31? If yes, forget about Selective Service. The interviewer is almost surely not going to ask you for it at your age.

Yes, you may need proof if asked ... but you almost surely won't be asked for it, and if asked you can remind them you're over 31 which puts the last day to register outside the statutory period. So don't worry about it unless you are actually asked for it.

Were you over 26 at the time when you get your Green Card or another immigration Status in US?

In that case you have even less to worry about. Once you mention your age when first arriving in the US, the interviewer really should not question you any more about Selective Service at all.

Just as a note... I'm 38 and they asked me for the Selective Service letter... so they do ask for it... that said, I came to the US before age 26 so I did have to register... My point is that IF you were required to register they do sometimes ask for verification. In this case though, the OP has no worries... if you came to the US AFTER 26th birthday you don't have to register.

During the interview if you can explain that you only got your GC after you turned 26 it should not be an issue at all. I came before I was 26 but got my GC after I turned 26. I did not carry it and the IO asked me for details and when he saw the dates etc. he did not bother at all. Jackolantern is right; stop worrying unnecessarily. There are enough people on this board who are over cautious and would try to instill the same unnecessary fear in you. Asking about SS does not mean they will not take your word. They have the entire A-file in front of them to re-verify the entry/GC dates if they want. And your case is even more straight forward since you only entered when you were 34.

And what was the result of that? Did you defend yourself by reminding them you are over 31?

I had the Selective Services print out from the website and they accepted that. Since I got my GC before age 26 I was obliged to register and I did. Print out confirmed the registration and matter was over. :)

To reiterate... I don't think the person asking the question here needs to worry about it at all... he did not have any legal obligation to register since he arrived here and received his green card after age 26... I don't think that he would have ANY problem just stating this fact, since it will be clear to IO when he got GC.

I was just putting forward my experience for someone who said that they don't really ask for Selective Services letter... in my case they did.

Nobody here said they NEVER ask for it past age 31. It's just that they usually don't. And I haven't heard of them putting "decision cannot be made" and forcing an over-31 applicant to submit the letter after the interview, after the applicant pointed out being over 31 in the interview (if you know of any such cases please point it out).

I was just commenting on this response... despite "ALMOST SURELY NOT GOING TO ASK FOR IT"... they did. I'm glad I had it, and wanted to give OP MY EXPERIENCE. I wasn't attacking you, brother.

That's all.

yes; I am well over 35; But i read several postings here that says i need a proof if asked for.

Sethu, were you here between 18 & 26, in my interview he asked me about it, as I was under 26 when I was living in USA, I just told him I didn't know about it, he asked me when did I come to know, I replied only when I was filling my N400, he said ok and that was that..
