I am 37 years old and I will be applying for my citizenship this summer.
I got my greencard when I was 32.

1) Was I supposed to register for selective service after I got green card.
2) Can I do it now.
3) Will it affect my application for citizenship.

Someone knowledgable please answer these questions.

selective service

Hello,

I have read many threads related to selective service in this forum and going thru the web site for selective service, and from there i concluded that every US MALE CITIZEN ,IMMIGRANT, ILLEGAL ALIENS,REFUGEES between the age of 18 and 26 has to register for selective service .

Those who are not required to register are those on visitor visa, student visa, men who are part of a diplomatic or trade mission and their families.Almost all other male noncitizens are required to register.

I called USCIS and taked to immigration officer and he stated the same thing but he also added that those non immigrant on H1 (WORK) visa accordoing to federal govt are not suppose to register so there is no need of STATUS INFORMATION LETTER

My husband came here on H1 .A month before his 26th birthday .I want to seek reassurance from this forum that what i have understood regarding the requirement for selective service, is it correct?

Plz i need your help to clearify my query. That those on work visa are also not required to register ?

I will really appreciate the in put

Thanks in advance

kas

H1b is a non-immigrant visa (however, I assume you had a valid H1b visa when you were in US. etc)

I requested a status information letter from SSS.gov. I printed the form, and i sent a copy of my first entry stamp, and the visa, and a copy of my greencard, and passport.

I received the letter in 2 weeks or so.

selective service

I appreciate your input. It has really helped to clearify the confusion in my mind .Thanks again

But now the prOblem is that some how the first entry stamp on my passport is missing .I do not have it.

so can i send selective service a copy of my green card and H1 visa .

Is there any way from where i can get a record of my first entry to US.

THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR VALUABLE TIME

kas

if you came in with a H1B visa, i believe the stamp should be near to the visa page thou.

i am not sure how you can get the record thou. however, the h1b visa has the approval date, and let's see if it is good enough for applying the status letter.

give it a try. it is free to apply for the status letter besides of the postal. the worst case is they would ask for more supporting documents.

sss for myself ocworker more info

OCWORKER,

How did you find the form at the post office ?

I was 24 when I entered the USA on Aug 23 1992 as F1

I was 26 on 04/30/1994. I was still on F1 on that date.

I got I-797 in Oct 1995.

So at I was on VALID NONIMMIGRANT VISA at the age of 27 also.

So I dont think I needed to register for SSS.

Do I need to write a letter explaining this or just say that on my 26th birthday of April 1994, I was on F1 with a copy of my F1.

Please suggest.

Hello savithari,

I entered the USA when I was 22, and I was on F1 Visa till I am 28. When I went to my interview the officer never ask me about selective service letter. And NO you don’t need to write a letter.

I wish you the best.

ocworker said that form was there

There is no form for the status letter at the post office. I think what ocworker referred to was the price for the stamp. That's all the letter costs (and the copies of the visa pages in your passport.)

There are, at least here in CA, brochures about registering for Selective Service in the post offices. They are somewhere on the counter where all the postal forms are, and are colorful and titled "Men 18-25, you can handle this" or something like that.

Joe,

The form is there. It is available in the postoffice. Should I attach a cover letter or not with copy of my F1 and a copy of the first date of entry (in my expired passport ofcourse).

I dont know where ocworker found the form. The SSS.gov website also tells about the form available in the local post office. I dont know why they just dont put it out there as a PDF file.

I know you are very good with your views. It is sometimes harsh but you know what I like that. Thanks to you I came to know about AR-11 and I sent it out.

Please read my questions in another post with user=savithari. Please answer to it in that thread without fail.

aplogies for confusion

Joe,

It is not my intention to attack you verbaly or abuse you. My wordings are not that. It is meant as a reminder in a gentle way when I said
"Please read my questions in another post with user=savithari. Please answer to it in that thread without fail."
I am a Britsh English user so it causes confusion.

If for some reason you have felt that I am verbally abusing you, I am REALLY SORRY. I value your opinion very much. So please dont take anything here in a wrong way. I hope its cleared up from my side.
