Selective Registration Service Question

Hi,

I entered USA when I was 25 years old. I am a mle. I entered on a Student (F-1) visa which is a non-immigrant visa. Now I am 40 years old.

On Form N-400 for question # 33 (Selective Registration Service) -- Section G, I answered No (stating that I did not need to register ) which is the correct answer.

However, some folks have been getting interview letters stating that they need evidence of Selective Service Registration.

I know I can write to the Selective Service and try to get a letter stating that I did not need to register. My questions are:

1. What is the Web Site or Tel # of Selective Service Registration agency?
2. What documents do I need to send them to prove that I did not need to register with them?
3. Normally, How long will it take to get the letter back from them.
4. Instead of getting the letter can I just take my passport with the F-1 visa along with my Graduation Certificate and I-20 to the Citizenship Interview. Will that suffice?

Any Help appreciated.
 
If you entered on a non-immigrant visa, and you were in status (and non-immigrant) until after you were 26 (in particular, didn't get a GC until after that), then Selective Service isn't an issue. I arrived (non-immigrant) in my early 30s, got my GC in my mid thirties and didn't do anything about selective service (on the application, at the interview, etc). It never was an issue.

They have your birthdate, and the date of all of your immigration statuses and they can add. I wouldn't worry about it.

(I'm not a lawyer, etc.)
 
I believe that even visa holders must register for Selective Service if they were obtained before the age of 26. So theoretically yes, you needed to have applied when you first got here under the visa (if that was still correct back then). Rules maybe have been different as that was some time ago considering you're already 40.

I just think you'll just get a waiver letter which you can take to your interview if that's the case and you were supposed to have registered. I should look at the Selective Service site, though I do believe anyone under 26 regardless of what visa/GC etc they were on were required to apply...


Ok just looked it up, F-1 student visas are one of the few that you did not have to register for. Me having been on a TN (thought I was 27 and didn't have to do it), but if I was 26 or younder on a TN I would have had to register...

That is not correct
If you are on any non-immigrant visa - H1, F1, J1, B1, etc, etc you are not required to register with Selective Services
 
Hence why I had already stated in the post that an F-1 you do not have to apply to Selective Services, but a TN you would...

But do I still need the letter from SS?? (The Status Information Letter)
 
Just call them up and they will let you know if you needed to register or not by them I mean SSS.They dont care.Most prob they will send letter stating .You should have registered but they dont have any record that they notified you and you did it on purpose.You will need that letter down the road when you apply for federal job.So it worth gettting it.You get it in 2 weeks. :eek:

You know it is kind of confusing, since it states on the N-400 if you have been here before the age of 26 you need a letter if you were supposed to register. On the SS site, it states to get the details you can get the status information from the INS.

I would think the INS already has your history on file anyways and then would know if you should have registered or not. I'm sure they'll let you know during the interview if it is needed or not, but seeing you were on a F-1, then I can't see that being an issue...
