.
1. Senator Kyl (R-AZ) is expected to offer a PATRIOT II amendment. His measure would, among other provisions, authorize the secret use of secret evidence in civil immigration proceedings.
2. Senators Sessions (R-AL), Cornyn (R-TX) and Miller (D-GA) are expected to offer a CLEAR Act-type amendment. This measure seeks to deputize local law enforcement as immigration agents, a terrifying prospect for immigrant communities. This measure goes far beyond the 9/11 Commission recommendations and would serve to undermine rather than further the security of our communities and nation.
3. Senator Grassley (R-IA) is expected to offer an amendment that would prohibit review of visa revocations and would make such revocations a basis for deportation. This means individuals lawfully admitted to the U.S. would be subject to removal for reasons they are unable to challenge either administratively or judicially.
4. Senators Cantwell (D-WA), Schumer (D-NY), and Sessions (R-AL) are working on several amendments that would impose unrealistic biometric requirements on both U.S.-issued visas and foreign-issued travel documents. These measures would undo the considerable progress already made to improve the security of travel documents and would impose unachievable deadlines that would not enhance our security but would instead lead to delays and confusion in the international community.
