Save Some Money On Expediated Passport

Hi,

When you apply for your passport,
you get the option of expediatiting ($30)
which cuts down the time to 4-6 weeks
and paying a further $13.95 (varies b/w
postoffices) for Fedex mailing passport
back to you.

Don't worry about the fedexing. My situation
below is typical.

Applied at post office on 03/30.
Passport shows up on on-line system
on 04/05.
Passport finished and mailed on 04/06
(link to tracking number provided)
Gets to me on 04/09.

So I maybe Fedexing will buy you an
extra day, but given it taking under
2 weeks to process the passports,
it's not that bad.

Obongo,

Did your online status show your application as "expedited" or did it mistakenly say "routine processing" as a couple of us have experienced?

Thanks for your passport timeline. Very helpful.

Teddy.

At one of our local post offices, you can pay the State department expediting fee and not pay for "XPress Mail" ($14.95 each way).

At the other, they require that expedited passport applications pay for XPress Mail both ways. The "XPress Mail" shaves a day or three off the round trip and doesn't seem worth it.

It might be good to find a post office that will allow you to pay only the State department's expediting feee (which, to me, after waiting all of the N-400 processing time, seems to be worth it).
