SARS and POE

Hello Everybody,

In recent time have anyone of you faced any problem at POE due to SARS screening etc? We're departing in 2nd week of May and taking Lufthansa by Chennai-Frankfurt-LA route. Due to SARS (and having a 2-year old kid) I'm kind of scared to use pacific route.

Please update me with what should I expect at LAX? Any kind of info regarding this will be helpful.

With best regards.

luit2001,

It is not my intention to scare you. But I had the same dilemma.
The nearest POE to me is San Francisco. I cancelled that route
flying over pacific in view of SARS and re-routed myself through
Chicago.

If your flight flies non-stop from Frankfurt to LA then I do not
see any problem. But I doubt, they usually stop just before
the pacific in one of the far east countries. If that is the case
then there is reason for concern.

What happens at LAX will only be an inconvenience at worst.

The worry will be more about travelling for such a long time
in the closed cabin of an airliner coming from those countries!

Guys...

It's true that they pinpointed the first few cases to a hotel in Hongkong, but SARS is a communicable respiratory infection. It has now been reported in almost all of the civilized countries. Original death rates were inflated-now they have estimated a 4% mortality rate with SARS. It may be higher for the very young and the very old. By the time we get to travel, the illness will have spread even more-making it a risk whichever route you take to reach India. However, at the present time, it may be less risky to travel the trans-atlantic routes. You may also want to check out the CDC and the state dept travel advisory.

No Problem at LAX

Hi All,

I had come from KL (Malaysia) on last week of March 03 directly to LAX via Taipei on business trip. As it was very new, we didn't know about SARS at all. When we landed in LAX, the agents handed out Yellow Card Stating that if you feel sick in another 10 days , any symptoms of cough or fever, please see the doctor immediately and to nofity the authorities. I came to know about SARS at that time and Thank God i was fine.
Lot of things has happened since then at San Jose , Definitely you all might have heard about that. Dont want to scare anybody, but if you are coming thru europe you should be fine.
And dont know the latest in LAX as i have not flown back to pacific since then.

This is all the information i want to share, hope this helps. Dont worry you all coming via Europe will be fine.
All the Best for all ur interviews.

Cheers!
VinCP.

Less chances of SARS if you fly by Atlantic

Guys,

Forget about arguments, definetly Atlantic route a bit safer than PAcific route. I Sincerely advise folks to use Lufthansa( which has 6 flights/week to chennai & everyday to Delhi & Mumbai) from Frankfurt and Non stop from Frankfurt to almost all main US cities( including west coast cities like SFO,LAX,POrtland,DENVER etc). So if we blow some money extra also, defenetly it may be safer.

Likewise British Airways & Ofcourse AIR INDIA( atlantic route).

Its your Choice ,

Thanks guys..

Thanks for your valuable information. Appreciate from the bottom of my heart. I feel confortable now as we will be taking atlantic route. Chennai-Frankfurt (non-stop) and Frankfurt-LA (non-stop). I know nobody can predict about what will happend in another month to atlantic route but I still feel safe.

Thanks again and keep your sugguestion/experience coming..
