Sai Gunturi - Damn good show boy !

Good to see him winning this time.

Watched last year's recording on TV recently. Impressed with all the kids competing at the highest level.

Actullay thought this boy might win last year itself. Some other boy Pratyush ? (CO) won in 2002.

Great!

Well done Sai! CNN is becoming blatantly biased in their reporting. There are 6 paragraphs (130 words) about the home-schooled runner-up and just 5 paras (113 words) about the winner who obviously isn't 'white'!

To give you an example:

The article opens with "A 13-year-old eighth-grader from Dallas nailed "pococurante" -- meaning indifferent or nonchalant -- to win the 76th Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee on Thursday. ", whereas for the runner-up it starts with "Evelyn Blacklock, a 14-year-old eighth-grader who is home-schooled in Tuxedo Park, New York, was the runner-up.

Here's a clear example to belittle the winner's achievement:

"It was Sai Gunturi's fourth time in the competition."

Do not place irrelevant things on site

SHYRADISH:

This is not the palce to put such links....This is an immigration forum

Good for the geek!

I dont know about you guys but I DONT want my kid to be a spelling bee or a chess champ. Thats too geeky! I'd rather have a son who drinks beer on the couch and watches football than someone who spells pococurante! :D

Agree with PatienceGC. I dont want kids to spend too much time burying their heads in the books. Kids need a happy sports life.

I would like to see some indians in the NFL or something. Would be so cool.

yo! Chidda...

if you don't like it, move on buddy ! I don't wanna get stressed with your "oh! this is a immigration site only" crap...

unwind a little bit...think about other things...have a good weekend !!

dude...besides, look at my original posting. I don't understand what part of the "just read it and get back to your mission." you didn't get ???? Why are you so naive...?...why do we have to tell you things over and over and over again ?? There are people in this world who really mean things when they say it !!...don't you get it ?? - sorry dude...I'm supposed to feel empathetic when I talk to people like you..I can't believe how ignorant you have become...good luck bud

That's a very interesting way to look at bringing up your kids in this country. yeah! me too..I wanna see some Indian-origin kids make it like LeBron James and Yao Ming. That'd be a job well done as well. I don't wanna get stuck in the Stereotype "Indians are all bookworms !!"....(well, that helps increase property value when you go shopping for a house!! but still ....u know !!)

Please dont misundertand

It IS a great achievement. I think what he did was absolutely great. Hats off! But considering 4 of the last 5 spelling bees are of Indian origin... we ARE being stereotyped :D Its shouldnt become like the beauty contests. Sure we all remember Aish and Sush but there have been so many after that that I dont even know who did what. I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. Its good to know that people are setting the bar higher but I see some parents who are heart broken cuz their kid didnt make it to the top of the class. I find that many indian parents are very aggressive even if they have a slow learning child. I see some anchors who are desis... to my surprise one was on FOX!!! Atlanta has a desi anchor. I think to make the biggest impact (recognition) we need to be in the media and sports. Realistically we probably wont have a running back, but we could have receiver or maybe just maybe a QB ;)

Absolutely!! Though I believe it takes eons of time before we see a QB or receiver, nothing wrong in giving it a try. By doing so, sooner or later we will have desis the pro sports.

HA HA HA AH AHA HA HA HA AH

That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time !! ..Imagine that...."oh..let's put money away so the kid grows up to be an Immigration Officer".....you know...the way I see it, they are like LIC of India employees.....not too ambitious !

ha ha..good one though man !

there are Indian Kids doing cool things too, in my favorite sport Golf there are 3 Indian american girls on the LPGA tour and there are good Indian golfers from India, Jeev Milka Singh, Bunty Randhawa and Arjun Atwal blazing their trail in the European tour, Jeev gave Tiger a run for his money in 2001 Dubai classic.

It takes a certain kind of kid to win a spelling bee and a different kind of kid to be good sports person. However you are right that immigrant parents, specially from Asia have to encourage their kids to excel in non academic fields too.
