RTD - Do we need a transit visat for UK?

Hi,
I am new here; however I can tell my experience with that issue. I did go to Europe (Germany only - and you do not need a visa to go to that country only) and on the way back to the U.S., I had a 2-hour stop in London to change planes. Before I went on my trip, I tried to figure out on the UK (visa dept. ) offiicial web site, and didn't find an exact answer - do people on a RTD (I'm an asylee from South America) need a transit Visa? From what I undertood, we might not need one transit visa just to change planes in an UK airport - info I found on that site is not very clear though. I wasnt't sure if a visa was needed, but I travelled anyway, and I had no problem at all. As of matter of fact, the plane (that was going to bring me back to the U.S) had a problem in London, and we had to stay over night in London. United had to pay hotel rooms for everybody in the plane. I didn't have a visa, I went to line to talk to immigration officer, explained that the plane could not departure, and the officer gave a 24 hour entry permit. So I was able to get out of the airport and stay in the hotel in London overnight. Hope my experience helps you somewhat.

Thanks for info. Actually, I recently transited throught Belgium, I got a transit visa, but no-one checked whether I had a transit visa. I also checked the British embassy website, and it's not very clear a tall whether we need a transit visa. I also called the airlines and they did not know either! So, I'm going to transit UK without a transit visa.

Yes i was told that you are required to have a transit visa if you are holding a RTD.It takes less than 2 weeks if you process the visa application on the website otherwise the normal processing time is 2 weeks.gino said:
