Hello,
I am newbie on this forum, read many posts and found them very helpful. But today I have a question that I want answered from the experienced people here :)

Anyhow I recieved my RTD today and now I want to apply for Canadian visa soon, since my sister is PR in Canada. I have taken a semester off from college, since I wanted to work and earn some money for all the college tution and stuff. And now looking at the economy right now, it is very hard to find a reliable job, so basically I am unemployed, and a "dependent" of my parents. I do have a good bank balance, I mean savings from my previous jobs which I didn't want to touch for college tution. So my question is what are my chances of getting a visa to Canada? Are there other documents that I can show to prove that I will come back to US no matter what in the given period? And to add I live in NY so the NYC Counslar office is the one I will most probably be applying at? Please good people any suggestion, tips, info will help a lot! I miss my sister :( She can't come here because of her inadmissible period. Thank You.

Are you resident permanent already or just asylee?

Are you applying for a non immigrant canadian visa or an immigrant visa?

How long are you planning of residing outside the U.S?

The response to those questions is critical to your status in U.S.

I am sorry I didn't clear all these before:

I am an asylee, I mean I was granted asylum on May 15th, and everyone else in my family was granted withholding.

I am applying for non immigrant visa, or a visitor visa.

And my visit will only be 2-3 weeks long.

Also I am planning on going from BC (where my sister lives) to Calgary (where my uncle lives), for visitation purposes only. Is it a good idea to get invitation letters from both or my sister's invitation would work fine, with the reason of me being there?

Avoid applying at Canadian consulate in NYC

1. Avoid applying for their visa at Canadian Counslar office in NYC. The only time I had a serious problem in getting Canadian visa on my RTD was at the same consulate, eventhough I had travelled to Canada (on my RTD) in the past. Later I learnt from this forum/other friends that if u r an asylee and 'want to apply for a Canadian visa then you must avoid this specific consulate. Well! I finally got this visa from the same consulate only after making a formal written complaint against their visa officer to their consulate general Pamela Wallin. So if possible avoid applying at this consulate.
2. Try getting a letter from your school that you are a full time student.
3. What other proofs you have which could prove your ties to the US ?

But if I apply somewhere else wouldn't they be calling me for an interview at that place? Or is there a way to sechdule an appointment in NYC.. And as I mentioned earlier I have taken this semester off, but someone did suggest to take a leave letter from the school so I might just do that if it's not late. I have my parents here. Hopefully I'll get it. Can you guys also suggest any other counslate which is a little easier to apply to? Thanks
