RFE Receipt Time frame- June filer

Hi,

I filed my I-485 application in June. Currently I am on vacation in India. Now I have got an RFE ( I had an incomplete medical test bcos of pregnancy ). USCIS has said I have to respond to the RFE by Jan 5th. But I will be back to USA only on Jan 10th. My questions is

1. Can we ask for an extension to respond to the RFE
2. what happens if we do not respond to the RFE by the time frame ?
3. Any alternatives?

call the 1800 number and enquire about your case. I would advise to prepone your trip and come back..why would you want to risk and play with your green card????
