hi people,
well... i asked a question few days back about my 2nd fp status not having been updated on the uscis site. it did on 18th june (at last!!!) but not to approval but RFE :( . dunno what the rfe is about though. to tell a li'l about my case... i am a derivative on my hubby's primary application which was approved june last year. my 485 was May'02 & 2nd fp was jan'04. will let you know what the rfe is about once i get to know it myself.

another interesting thing that happened was.. i called the national seervice center on the very day my status got updated. as in 18th june afternoon i called them & checked the status on 19th morning which showed rfe. i hope it was a mere coincidence & not that my calling them generated the rfe.... or did it??? haaaaaa!!! whatever.... whichever way... rfe it is !

i had another question to ask. can somebody tell me what is the process for a surname change at this stage. is it a smooth process or complicated? if anybody has had any experience or has any info on this please let me know. what are all the steps & who all need to be informed?
thanks

Did you get married after your husband filed his 485? Sometimes that generates an RFP for evidence of marriage, sometimes even a transfer for interview. Could also be something as benign as medicals, or proof of status before and when filing for 485...

Keep us posted and good luck!

fiona,

I wouldn't worry too much about the RFE. The fact that you are a derivative case and the primary applicant has already been approved, implies that your approval is all but guaranteed.

The RFE is probably for Marriage Certificate, and/or medicals. I think your approval will be right around the corner after you respond to the RFE.

Good luck!

don't try to do it right now. wait for your approval + plastic card. then initiate surname change in following order.
1. passport name change in consulate
2. social security card change
3. DMV change
4. finally green card change. You need to file I-90 with the documents you got from above three steps (with old name + new name)

hi,
thanks for all your replies. what happens if i get my surname changed now & send those documents alongwith my rfe response? will that create any problems? actually i will be applyin to universities this year and i wanted my name changed before sending out the apps.
thanks,
fiona

I don't see any problem, but there is a good possibility that your I485 approval will be delayed due to this additional name change step. You have to figure out what your priority is - I485 approval or name change.
