Return to home country - wait for GC?

Just not been able to make a decision on this and thought I would get a second opinion - just for the sake of it. My I485 date receipt date is in Sept-2002. I have been in this GC queue since 6 years - labor and then switch to RIR etc. Now however, I have been wanting to return to India since sometime but thought I would wait for GC - just an insurance for the next 1 year. But, is it worth it as I would give it up anyway. Wondering what someone else would do in this situation - forget GC and leave or get GC and leave.

I have had the very same thoughts over the years. I really do think that it is worth the wait. Then (if I understand the rules correctly) you can be out of the country at home for up to 6 months of the year. Why don't you wait, get GC, then see if you want to make the trip?

I am in exactly the same situation and seriously thought about giving up about a year and a half ago. Then I thought, I haven't stayed in this same job (that I don't really enjoy) for 7 years, to give up now. Wait, get the freedom, then decide where you really want to be.

It's a terrible decision to make so I really wish you the best of luck. :)

Hi,

I would wait and get GC. I know its frustrating but I feel we should take the benefits. You have done your time..:)

Thanks

For the GC to remain in validity , you will have to be in US for atleast 6 months in any given year and after 6 months continous outside the US, GC becomes invalid. and I am not sure if you would then need a visa to re-enter or you can use GC !.
Once you get a GC and to remain outside the US > 6 months and to keep GC validity, you will have to take permission showing the valid reasons. Please double check all these.

If you take GC and go back to your home country without the permission and In future if you want to settle down and restart the whole process then it might be a problem since first time you did not utilize the GC and keep its validity.

I am not sure, I think you should take expert advocate advice on this before making such decisions for future consequences.

On the other hand, After getting GC you might change your mind.

Take care..

Well, i have been thinking the same thing. from what i have heard (my uncle and aunt are retired, and they used to do this)
you can leave the US on 1st of July of current year, and as long as you return before 30th June the next year, you are ok to validate GC. So it gives you just under a year in India to decide.
Gurus, is this correct?

Goober

jayesh1312000, I also think on these lines everytime I make a trip to India. Made 5 trips in my 6 years. I finally concluded that no point of leaving it in the middle.
Just in case I have to start it over again, waste another 6-7 years!!
