Return ticket for B2 extension

Hi,

I am planning to apply for my mother-in-law's B2 visa extension. She came to US on July 2nd and got 3 months of stay (in I-94) at POE. She has visa for 1 year.

Here are my questions:

1. Since she has only two months left, I am planning to apply now forextension as processing time is more than two months now. Is this a good time to apply or is it too early?

2. She has open return ticket. I read in this forum that a valid return ticket is required for extension and open ticket will not do. Does that mean I book the ticket for the anticipated extended date? If, so what will happen if the visa is not extended? On the other hand if I book the ticket for anticipated extended date could it indicate pre-planning for extension application. Can someone share their experience of how they handled the valid return ticket issue.

3. For documents required to show ties to return to India, we plan submit the same documents she showed at the time of visa application (like properties in home country, family, bank statements etc.). Are these enough or any other documents are required? Any suggestion would be helpful.

I would greatly appreciate if you can share your experience/knowledge in these things and on B2 extension process in general.

Thanks.

Since your mom has a one year visa only i would advise against extension. She will probably not get a new stamp if you extend her stay this time.

H1B-Visa for my dad who is 55 yrs old

Hi people,

I have my father who is working as a vice principal of an engineering college in India.
He is a MTECH from IIT and he was in the machine tools industry working with HMT for 20 yrs and then moved to Teaching.

He is very keen on teaching in US and taking up any research job in US.

Kindly suggest on the route he goes by.

I would be extremely grateful to you for the information.

Thanks,
Vipanchi

If you do decide to file the extension, here are some suggestions to your questions:

1. The filing date becomes the date from which the extension will occur. For example, if you are requesting a 6 month extension it will start from the filing date, not the date her current B2 expires.

2. Yes you should book the ticket for the anticipated return date (i.e. 6 months from filing date). If she is not approved she must leave the country immediately. Keep this in mind when deciding which airlines to use. Some allow for date changes with a nominal fee.

3. Those documents all seem appropriate.
