can you return the green card if you leave the us permanently and don't want to be taxed in both countries? does the person who sponsored you (my dad) get in trouble?

do you know if there are negative consequences for the person that sponsored you?
thanks for all your help by the way.

nat77. Why would you get taxed in both countries? Most developed and developing countries have agreements with USA to avoid double taxation.

What will happen?

Hello JoeF and other people in this forum,

The website you have mentioned provides the following information:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the DHS office in London receives your completed Form I-407 and the returned Permanent Resident Card, the appropriate documentation stamps will be placed on the form along with the DHS officer’s signature. A copy of this form will be returned to you. This is your receipt and validates the return of your Permanent Resident Card. You should keep a copy with your passport in the event you are queried about your prior U.S. immigration status.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

What happens if you are not that honest, thus, if you do not return your Green Card? When you enter USA with your Green Card and officers at the PoE notice that your permanent place of living is not USA, but abroad.
Will you be arrested?
Or do you have to leave USA immediately with the next plane?
Will you be banned from entering USA for the rest of your life? Or for how much time will you be banned?
Do you get the chance to enter the US with your Green Card, hire a lawyer and then go to US court?
Are there any new laws in the post-9/11 time?

These questions might be very interesting for many users here in this forum. Otherwise they wouldn't be that much afraid of staying abroad for a certain time.

There would certainly be issues. You would be considered to have abandoned LPR status and would probably not be allowed in the country. If your intent would be to enter as an immigrant, without any other valid status, you would be prevented from entering. This all relies, of course, on the POE officer knowing that you have exceeded your permitted time limit abroad.

"If you are not honest" - this is something you NEVER want to try at a POE as it can lead to serious consequences.

I have a friend (USC) who got his mother a GC years ago but she lives overseas and enters the US every six months. This pattern has not escaped the notice of the POE officers and they questioned her for 2 hours on last entry, but they did let her in. It's getting increasingly difficult to fool the system as they are connecting their monitoring and computer systems rather well these days.

I'm not sure how the 'bars' work as the typical 3 and 10 year ones are related to illegal presence in your history - overstaying I-94s, etc.

Unfortunately, my questions are still not answered.
Could anyone please give a statement? Thanks.

You know what. You shud donate your GC to charity. Do an evaluation of the GC and put the figure somewhere around $50K. :p Then you can claim a tax deduction on that amount and get a refund. ;)
How about that..huh..?!!
