You can work on the EAD till the time your husband has a valid J1. next year , when he will start working, either you can switch over to J1 or if your husband signs for national waiver intertest program and hospital is willing to sponser his green card then an EAD could be issued for spouse.

If you don't acquire J1 - you will not be bound to do waiver...that is a big advantage.

Once your husband got a job - case can be discussed with attroney.

One of my friend from Pakistan has completed her resisdency in Feb 2006 and she signed a contract under National Waiver Program and in June 2006 her husband started his residency.

Let me know if you have any other question.

other options are:
start residency with EAD till expiration of your husbands J1, then if your residency program sponsors H1B get them to file an H1B petition for you, otherwise you'll have to apply for a J1 visa, if possible explore other options firstand go for J1 as a last resort because of the 2year home residency requirement.
