Requirements for passport stamping?

Hi all,

1. How long should your passport be valid for when you go for stamping?

2. When your case is approved, and you receive the letter, do they impose a date when you absolutely have to have the stamp done by, or else it will be considered abandoned?

Thanks!

Once your I-485 is approved, you are a legal permanent resident. There's no law that states that if you don't get the I-551 stamp by a certain date, you will be considered abandoning the LPR status. (The only thing that I know of is if you are absent from the country for more than 6 months without obtaining the re-entry permit).

However, you SHOULD get that stamp, which is a temporary proof of your legal permanent residency, as soon as possible. With this stamp on your passport, you can travel freely, you can get your SSN card updated (remove the restrictions), etc.

Why would you want to delay?
