1) What are the value in having you represented by an Attorney?
2) It occurs to me that Attorneys typically just bundle up the stuff that you give them & lodge the petition
3) I realized that there are individuals who went on their own & been successful

It is not black and white. If you can find an attorney in your local area with good reputation and has done the similar cases successfully, also ask reasonable price, you may want to go for an attorney. If you are very familiar with all the issues related to your category, and you know how to present your case clearly and strongly, you might be able to do yourself. If you got RFE and they ask everything, I would suggest finding an attorney, especially for EB1 or NIW case.

I think that if you have lots of money or/and your case is not very strong go for the attorney. If your case is strong, get the petitions from your friends and wrap up your own one. I did everything myself. The attorney will provide you with sample letters, but you still have to write the letters yourself. Lawyer can reassure you (make you feel secure) but he does not gaurantee anything. So, if your case is strong DO IT YOURSELF.
