This is a hypothetical question, but has anyone here dealt with having to replace a U.S. passport if it is lost or stolen while travelling abroad?
I looked up the procedures posted at the websites of a few U.S. consulates and they all require providing a proof of U.S. citizenship in such cases (a previously issued passport or a naturalization certificate). I am travelling in Europe now, for about a month, and my naturalization certificate is in a safety deposit box in my bank back in the U.S. So if my U.S. passport is lost or stolen while I am here, I would have a rather hard time providing an original of any document proving my U.S. citizenship (I do have scanned pdf copies of both the passport and the naturalization certificate). Does anyone know how such cases are treated in practice?
