Dear Sir,

I am a student on F1 status. i completed all my course work and my dissertation. till my completion of my disseratation i did not apply for OPT because i am not sure whether they(faculty) approve r not and i dont want to loose my OPt time by applying before. fortunately, I completed my disseration and all the course work is being completed(aug 15 th, 2005) . when i went to the international office to apply for OPT , she told that its too late and i wont be able to get my OPT. my actual I-20 was till 2006 jan. and i completed my graduation in summer 2005. I didnt apply before the graduation date(aug 1, 2005) because of above reason. I am so worried regarding this issue. Please advice me and suggestions what iam supposed to do if i need to be in status and get my OPT. it would be appreciated. I am desperate for answers from you ASAP.

thank you for your time and consideration

thanking you,

Apparently, you are late in applying for OPT, sorry.

my actual I-20 was till 2006 jan.

I-20 has nothing to do with course completion. If you take extra courses, you can complete the program prior to the completion date mentioned on the I-20. If you take lesser course load (some universities permit) or take a break in any semester for health reasons, you might need to extend your I-20.

and i completed my graduation in summer 2005. I didnt apply before the graduation date(aug 1, 2005) because of above reason.

Students must submit an application for optional practical training prior to course completion date. Applications received at USCIS after the completion date will be denied.

If you did not apply for OPT prior to course completion date, there is nothing you could do about that now, since your are late. Just enroll in another 1 or 2 year program (not necessarily in the same school, try to get GA), complete the program and then apply for OPT. If you don't want to do another program and you can find employment, convert your status from F1 to H1B, since you have master's degree and 10,000+ visas are still available.

Get over it and move on. Good luck.

Hi Vishu,

There is 60 day grace period link , since your graduation day is august 1st, you still have some more days left. Just find a job with someone who can file for your H1.

good luck.
