I was on a H4 Visa and recently a company has done H1 for me. Is it a must that I have to go to my native country to get the H1 Visa stamping on my passport or can I go to a third country like Canada or Mexico?

may not be necessary if you\'ve never been out of status

from what i have understood, if you have never been out of status, you could start work immediately after you H1B is approved. If you plan to trave abroad after the approval, you may have to go to Canada or Mexico to get passport stamped, otherwise you have to go to your home country\'s US embassy for the stamp...

You might have to go back to your native country

What I am saying is all by experience. Few of my friends have been in touch with Mexico US consulate and they told me both Canada and Mexico have stopped stamping visa from H4 to H1. Again, call them up and check for yourself. I guess is this is true.
