Reentry Permit

Hi,

What is the procedure for Reentry permit (6mos+ stay outside the US) application? Could you please point me to some URLs? How much does it cost and does it guarantee reentry at the POE? Many thanks.

Nothing guarantees reentry. A reentry permit allows reentry if you have been abroad for over 1 year. Your stay abroad still had to be temporary all the time, and you are still required to file US tax returns as resident, and you still can't have any of the grounds of inadmissibility that are listed in INA 212.

Thanks JoeF. I understand the requirements for a temporary stay abroad. I was just wondering that in case a person got stuck outside the US for more than 6 mos, for whatever reason (family, etc), would a reentry permit comes in handy at the POE. That was the reason behind the question. Of course, you still have to justify the absence and I would like to believe that having a reentry permit puts you in a better position than without one.
