Hi All,

This forum has been extremely helpful so far.
Due to changed circumstances, my trip abroad is getting delayed. So I have to plan accordingly.

Can the experts please comment on whether the following alternatives are possible without negatively impacting N400 ? Which approach would you recommend as the safest ?

I became PR in May 08 and since then only spent 8 weeks outside US in separate trips.

Option A :
1. Apply for Reentry permit in early January ( This is sort of back up to protect GC just in case )
2. Apply for N400 in early February
3. Get fingerprinted in late Feb and leave US
4. Come back for Interview and request same day oath ( Does filing Reentry permit have any negative consequences on N400 interview when I do not have N470 ?)

Option B
1. Apply for Reentry permit in Mid December
2. Reentry FP in Mid Jan
3. Apply for N470 in early Jan
4. Leave US in Mid Jan
2. Apply for N400 in late March ( from abroad, through a lawyer in the US)
3. Come back for FP in April and leave US
4. Come back for Interview and request same day oath ( I am in the greater NYC area)

Thank you so much for your help.

Option A seems to be feasible. As far as I know you cannot request same-day oath and some offices do not offer same-day oaths. So after the interview you might need to come back for the oath ceremony. So you need to plan accordingly.

Thanks for your help.

Is there any chance that during interview I will be grilled over the 2 months+ outside-US presence between FP and interview ?
My reason in REP will be : "Temporary business assignment for the current US employer"
MY ASC will be portchester. NY and field office will be NYC field office Jacob Javits building.

To be on the safe side, have proof with you during the interview. Those would be tax return transcripts for the last five years, bank/mortgage/lease statements, a letter from your US employer etc. showing that you have ties in the US and that you are out of the country only on a temporary basis.

There is no problem for traveling between FP and interview or between N-400 submission and interview (if the trip is less than 180 days not to break the continuous residency). During the interview you will need to inform the officer that you traveled after you have submitted your N-400. The officer will update your N-400 form during the interview accordingly.

The same applies if your oath is scheduled for a later time and you do travel between interview and oath ceremony. There is a section at the back of the oath notice where you would need to indicate that you traveled after your interview.

Option B looks like a better plan, as it should result in you having the N-470 approved before the interview.

Does filing Reentry permit have any negative consequences on N400 interview when I do not have N470 ?
There is never any negative consequence for having a reentry permit. The negative in your case is the time you'll be working abroad; if you don't have an approved N-470 you can expect problems in the interview because of working abroad.

Thanks both of you. I think considering Jackolantern's last comment, if I can push out my trip by a couple of months, I may go for an
Option C

1. Apply for Reentry permit in Mid December
2. Reentry FP in Mid Jan
3. Apply for N470 in early Jan
4. Apply for N400 in early Feb
5. Hope for N400 FP in late Feb and then leave US
6. Come back for Interview in June and request same day oath ( I am in the greater NYC area )

For NYC field office, do you have any idea what the expected lag will be between interview and oath ?
Also, how long should I expect to stay in the US for US passport and Indian PIO ?

Thank you so much.

Option C looks promising as well.

Looking at various trackers for the NYC field office, I see time frames from 3 weeks up to 2 months between interview and oath.

US passport is not a problem since you can get same-day passport at a passport agency with expedited service if you have upcoming travel within two weeks.

I have no info about Indian PIO.
