Receipt of VISA number before applying for I-485

My I-140 (EB1) was approved on oct.2000 at VSC and the PD date for this category is current. I have all the documents ready for the application of I-485. I have not received any document from NVC, not even a receipt notice. Do I have to wait for VISA number before I can apply for I-485. Any help would be appreciated as I am applying by myself.
Thank you in advance

From what I understand, you do not need to wait for any visa number. Basically, after your I-140 is approved, you should wait till your PD is current (already current for you), then with all documents needed, file I-485. When INS processes your application, they approve (assuming everything is ok) and if the visa numbers are available, then they assign one. Otherwise, your application will wait in approved (or "pending due to visa number unavailability") status until a visa number is available and then you will get a notice to go for passport stamping.

The first thing I would recommend is to get yourself a decent lawyer and let him/her file your next stage - for which you\'ll need to file your Advance Parole, Finger Printing notice and adjustment of status - uness you have plenty of time on your H1 visa or any other visa you\'re currently working on, and simply go straight for Consular Processing which will first require that you file an I-824 to go for CP. Going the I485 route is currently taking about 2 years after I-140 (I\'m an EB1 case as well), while with CP, you\'ll be able to get your green card approved in about 6-8 months tops. EB1s are pretty much ALWAYS current, and so you can file immediately.
