receipt delayed

I sent my I-485 and all the required papers to Chicago 4 weeks ago. How long does it usually take for them to send me back a receipt number? I was told not more than 4 weeks. What do you suggest me to do now?

i got mine two weeks after sending application.
i guess it depends on office, but you can schedule infopass appointment and talk to some officer at your local uscis office

Thanks guys! At least I'm not the only one waiting for more than 4 weeks!
One more question. Is any of you holding F-1 status, and if so would you apply for Advance Parol once you are in the process?
Thanks again!

Do you plan to apply for it? I'm asking this because I haven't left the USA for more than 3 years and am more than eagar to go home for the summer. However, I'm not sure about that Advance Parol :( If you have any information, please let me know. If not, thanks anyway!

If it makes you feel better, I haven't been home 4 and a half years, and since I made it so far I'm not ready to jeopardize my AOS at the last minute. From my lawyer's experience, AOS interview notice can actually arrive 2 weeks or less before the interview. For me it can be any day now. I'll just hold on for a little bit longer, and then I'm going home for a month.
By the way, I'm on F-1 visa and I'm hoping to get an interview before the next school quarter starts because it would be like 3 times cheaper to register for classes, then what I'm paying right now. Since you are both on F-1 visa, are you both going to be registered for the classes until the interview?

I finally got it half an hour ago!!!! I mean, the receipt!
Yes, I fully agree, it's silly to take any risks now that we are so close. I probably wouldn't apply for it, but just wanted to know.
As far as classes are concerned, yes I am going to register for classes anyway, but I have a tuition waiver which, I guess makes my decision easier.
One more question. When do you think we'll have the interview? In other words, is it true that we are in the same boat with all those who applied for Adjustment of Status on different basis? If so, the New Orleans INS is currently working on May 2004, which means.... another year for me. :(
Thank you both for your prompt replies and... GOOD LUCK!!!

No, we are not in the same boat like regular AOS processing. Before my lawyer sent my paperwork in, he called USCIS and asked about processing for DV. They advised him to write on each folder DV2005, so that my file goes to fast track. We are definitely moving faster then regular AOS, just check the processing times at USCIS. The problem that is happening right now is that USCIS is trying to centralized all AOS interview scheduling from their Chicago center. So as of April 1st all scheduling will be done from there. That can cause a backlog, but hopefully I'll get my date before that.

Actually I have three more questions. By the way, I've juste scheduled FP for May 2.
1. what is the meaning of the code that we have on our Notice? (mine is 3)
2. how long does it take for them to check the background?
3. at which point do we get a interview date? when they have the results of FP checkup or some time before?
Thank you!

1. meaning of that code don't know, think it's region or service center, mine is also 3
2. when i did my fprints uscis received results for fprints in one week
3. you can have interview even before your background check is cleared, but in that case you will have to wait until it's cleared to get stamp in passport (that's pretty much my case), I got interview 4 and a half months after i got receipt notice

I think that's it, but on the link I gave you above, i read that some people due to prolonged security checks got them even after, but you don't want to go thru that

Nefertiti,

I checked the web site you mention but could not find anybody
mentioning getting the green card after September 30th because
of FBI name check delays. Could you specifically mention
the person and the date of the post where they talk about this.

Thanks

dv05, those posts are from last year , i just looked thru old messages ,this is the page containing issuing visa after September
http://www.eskimo.com/~parents/cgi-bin/index.cgi?root=46102
to find previous messages type in box 'get message by number' 46120 or more then in upper right corner click on message index here, it will list all the messages @ this number so you can look up the entire history of the case

Nefertiti,

Thanks for those posts. It seems some people got stamped
a few days after Sept. 30, as you said. On the other hand,
I guess all of them got FBI clearance before Sep. 30.
I'm mainly concerned about the length of that FBI process.
The reason is because I have a very "bad" type of finger print.
The person who took it says it is almost sure it will come back
from FBI as "unclear finger print" So my case may get delayed because of
that.

Did anybody have a similar problem ?

Thanks
