receipt date vs notice date

I would like to ask people who have gotten receipt notice. I know it usally takes 2-3 months to get the recipet notice for I-485. If you send the documents to INS on 3/1/01 via overnight Fedex, and you received the recipt notice on 7/1/01, is the recipt date on the notice usually like Mar,4, 2001? In other words, how much difference between the actual shipment to INS and recipt date on the notice.

No matter how late is the ND (now 2-3 months after you apply for 485),
RD is always within a week (usually 2-5 days) after you send your
application to INS.

so can I go to local INS office to get EAD after 3 months from RD for 1-485 or ND for I-485.
 Pls help.
